Shake it Off
Acts 28:5
"And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm."
What's the first thing you do when you find yourself in the midst of a situation that could cause you harm? Do you panic? Get upset? Call every person you know to give a detailed account of your unpleasant misfortune? Or do you, like Paul, "shake it off" and keep going?
You would think that after being shipwrecked on the island of Melita, the worst was over. But as soon as Paul escaped that disaster, he was faced with still another adversity. A poisonous viper had fastened itself to his hand as he was laying sticks on a fire he built. Those watching assumed the worst about him, believing he was a murderer, since he escaped the sea, but now was bitten by a snake. Yet, Paul was unmoved by their opinions and he did not let panic and fear influence or overtake him. He simply shook the snake off and felt no harm.
Father,
When difficulty or adversity seek to harm us, may we shake it off and keep going, according to Your Word and in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
