Truth vs. Tradition

2 Timothy 3
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

As a foundation for abundant living, Christian men and women must have strong, unwavering and uncompromised views and beliefs about Scripture. We must embrace the Word of God as the absolute truth -- the final and only authority on the issues of sin, salvation, eternal life, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and God.

Not only must we believe wholeheartedly that the passage above is the absolute truth -- that all Scripture was "inspired by God" -- but we must have the courage to stand our ground when confronted with traditions and doctrine that may have been passed down to us which contradict what the Bible says.

Even within our churches, there is a staggering number of those who are replacing or modifying the everlasting truths of Scripture with their own views and principles. However, we must closely examine our beliefs and what we are being taught to see if these things are "religion", or if they are God's truth. As we grow in the Lord, we must be sure that what we accept as "truth" is based on what God says in the Bible, rather than man's perspectives, opinions, and traditions.

Admittedly, this is not always an easy task. But for those who are committed to the frequent reading and study of the Bible, the Holy Spirit, as Jesus promised, will guide you into all truth.

"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth..." -John 16:13

Father,

May we continually compare popular and accepted traditions, views, and beliefs with Your holy Scriptures, which are able to make us wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. And may Your Holy Spirit guide us into all Truth, according to Your promise, as we allow Your Word to be the final and only authority in our lives. From the beginning, You have chosen us to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. You called us by the gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that we would stand fast, and hold the traditions which we have been taught, whether by word, or epistle, found in Your Word, the Holy Bible. For I pray and ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

"Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word or our epistle." -2 Thessalonians 2:15
