Slain in the Spirit?

Early in my Christian walk, I attended a church where I witnessed people calling out loudly in "tongues" and falling down at the altar. It was quite chaotic and I felt embarrassed to bring my family members to this church, (especially the ones I had been trying to lead to Christ).

Ignorantly, I asked a fellow brother what all the commotion was about, and I was told that those who were falling down were "slain in the spirit". When I returned home, I searched diligently for this phrase in Scripture, because to the best of my recollection, I had never heard of it, nor did I remember seeing it in the Bible.

I never did find the phrase, but what I did find was this:

"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints." -1 Corinthians 14:33

"Let all things be done decently and in order." -1 Corinthians 14:40

I also found this:

"If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?" -1 Corinthians 14:23

"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not..." -1 Corinthians 14:22

Clearly in the above verse, speaking in tongues was a gift bestowed by the Holy Spirit upon believers who would speak the wonders of God in other languages, as a sign, not to those who already believed, but to those who believed not. The God we serve is noble, with dignity, and He is not the author of such confusion. [Further study: Praying in Tongues? Truth or Tradition?]

The Father seeks those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). Our loving Father has given us this Truth, in His Word, with detailed instructions on how to live a life that is pleasing unto Him and how to worship Him decently and in order.
