Graven Images

Are the popular paintings and statues of the bearded Shepherd an accurate depiction of Jesus Christ? The Bible teaches us that in the past, God overlooked such thinking, but now commands everyone to repent.

Acts 17
²⁹ Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

³⁰ And of the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent...

God says in His Word not to create any graven image nor worship it -- two instructions in one command. Some Christians believe that you can possess an image (painting, statue, etc.), or artistically paint a portrait of Christ as long as you don't worship it. This is incorrect. We should not make them, nor should we worship them:

Exodus 20
⁴ Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

⁵ Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them...

To Whom Will Ye Liken God?

We should not be persuaded by man's idea of what Jesus looks like:

Colossians 1
¹⁵ Who (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God...

1 Peter 1
⁸ Whom having not seen, ye love...

John 20
²⁹ Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed: but blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Isaiah 40
¹⁸ To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare Him to?

Man cannot, in any way, depict the glory and majesty of Jesus Christ through artwork or skilled design.

2 Corinthians 5
⁷ For we walk by faith, not by sight...

Father,
As we continue to take up our cross daily, follow Jesus, and mature spiritually, may we walk by faith and not by sight, according to Your Word. For I pray and ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
