Gossip

As we daily study God's Word and mature as Christians, we begin to realize the need to put our "childish ways" behind us. The more wisdom we gain from God's Word and from life itself, the more we desire to learn from our mistakes, and live a life that is pleasing to God.

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." -1 Corinthians 13:11

Do you view slander or gossip as "childish" and did you know that these two things are displeasing to the Lord?

The Scriptural definition of a talebearer is a slanderer and a gossip:

"Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people..."
-Leviticus 19:16

"A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter." -Proverbs 11:13

"He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips." -Proverbs 20:19

"Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth." -Proverbs 26:20

Where there is no gossip or slander, there is no strife (Proverbs 26:20). Even the slightest negative opinion, criticism, or statement behind another's back is wrong in God's eyes.

The Bible teaches us to tame our tongues, to build up one another, not to tear each other down. We bless God with our mouths, but with the same mouths curse our brothers and sisters:

"Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be." -James 3:9-10

"There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health." -Proverbs 12:18

As we see above, our words have the power to heal if we use them wisely.

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." -Ephesians 4:29

Gossip does not build up a person, nor does it benefit the person listening to you doing it. We know in our hearts that gossip tears another person down. So, let us follow the wisdom that comes from God, live our lives to please Him, and train ourselves to tame our tongues.

Father,
As we walk closely with You, may we become consciously aware of every word that leaves our mouths. May we bless and not curse, may we speak only words that will benefit our hearers, and may we have the ability to pray for and walk away from those who choose to gossip. For I ask these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
