Let No Man Deceive You
And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin.
Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him.
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Jesus appeared that He might destroy the works of the devil. He was manifested to take away our sins, not that we should continue in them. One who is abiding in Christ is one who is daily renouncing sin in his or her life. Therefore we are warned, be not deceived by those who call themselves Christians, yet willingly and knowingly engage in sinful practices or lead sinful lifestyles. Anyone who does so does not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and has not become intimately acquainted with His ways and His Word.
This is how we know the children of God from the children of the devil. Anyone who abides in Christ is daily undergoing an inward change. He is sincere when he makes a mistake which leads to sin. He goes before God through Jesus Christ, with a change of heart, confessing and repenting of his wrongdoing. He is someone who has love for his brothers and sisters in Christ, and walks in the ways of God. Whoever is born of God cannot wilfully continue in sin. The person with a heart for God has had his conscience renewed by God, and it will not permit him to participate in evil, unrighteous ways in the sight of a holy God.
But children of the devil, regardless of the fact that they call themselves Christians, practice sin without a conscience, and therefore demonstrate in so doing that they are not born of God, nor do they have any regard for Him, His ways, or His people.
Free Indeed
Those who are walking in the Spirit and abiding in Jesus Christ:
• have crucified the flesh (Galatians 5:24)
crucified: the putting off of the flesh with its passions and lusts, a condition fulfilled in the case of those who are of Christ Jesus
• mortify the deeds of the body (Romans 8:13)
mortify: to put to death
• those born of God have His seed in them and they cannot go on sinning (1 John 3:9)
born of God: The children of God do not go on practicing sin because the principle of spiritual life has been imparted to the believer, therefore, they can no longer tolerate sin in their lives. The believer does not engage in sinful practices. Jesus Christ came to set us free from the bondage of sin:
"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." -John 8:36
Father,
We thank and praise You that Jesus Christ makes us free from the bondage of sin indeed. As we abide in Christ, may we continually and daily crucify and mortify the deeds of the body, that we may walk in this freedom. For I pray and ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
