12 Biblical Steps to Emotional Healing

Step One

I must recognize that "my way" is not working, and that God, alone, has the power to make me whole through Jesus Christ.

"When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been in that condition a long time, He asked him, Do you want to be made whole?" -John 5:6

  Step Two

I must acknowledge to myself and admit to God that I have sinned and that I am in need of a Savior.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus..." -Romans 3:23-24

  Step Three

I must make a conscious decision to heed the loving call of Jesus Christ.

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." -John 8:12

  Step Four

I must identify all of my sins, errors, and areas of weakness and confess them to God.

"I acknowledged my sin unto Thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin." -Psalm 32:5

  Step Five

I must not make "excuses" or try to justify or blame my sins and mistakes on others. I must willingly call sin what God calls sin.

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." -1 John 1:8

  Step Six

I will ask God's forgiveness through Jesus Christ, according to God's Word, the Bible, freely accept His forgiveness, and forgive myself as well.

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." -1 John 1:9

  Step Seven

I will, with God's help, turn away from/remove all areas of sin in my life, harmful habits, wrong thoughts, words, and actions. This is known as repenting.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." -Acts 2:38-39

  Step Eight

I will make a list of all the people that I feel have wronged me, and with God's help, I will freely forgive them. I will release all grudges, anger and bitterness, and I will humbly make peace and seek restoration wherever possible. Pride shall have no place in my life. Unforgiveness shall not grow in me like a cancer. The Bible says, If the Son shall make me free, I shall be free indeed (John 8:36). I will walk in this freedom by releasing any person who has knowingly or unknowingly hurt me.

"For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." -Matthew 6:14

  Step Nine

I will make a list of all those that I have wronged or hurt, and where possible, humbly seek restitution, peace and restoration.

"Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it." -Psalm 34:14

  Step Ten

When I make a mistake and/or sin, I will strive to recognize my wrongdoing and will promptly acknowledge it before God, seek His forgiveness, and quickly make amends with anyone I may have wronged or hurt.

"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered." -Psalm 32:1

  Step Eleven

I will commit to building a solid relationship with God through Jesus Christ, by setting aside time each day to read the Bible.

"Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me." -John 15:4

  Step Twelve

As I begin my spiritual journey and learn more about God, I will follow Jesus' instructions in the Bible, so that I may live an abundant life through Him.

"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." -John 10:10
