I Feel Sad

If you are getting the proper amounts of sleep and nutrition, yet you feel "the blues" you may be experiencing this feeling for one or more of the five reasons below.

Sailing Solo
If you're trying to sail through life's storms without a Savior, you'll face some difficult times. The Lord Jesus Christ can and will sustain you, as well as grant you joy and lasting peace. God's promises are an anchor for your soul.

"So God has given us both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to His promise with confidence. This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls."

-Hebrews 6:18-19 (New Living Translation)

"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

-John 10:10

You May Be Out of God's Will
Sometimes we go down paths that the Lord has not chosen for us, or make wrong choices or decisions. Simply ask Him to close the door on any choice that is not His will for your life. Then humbly ask Him to take control of your life and direct your steps, according to the plans He has for you. (Remember -- God is not far from any one of us. The Bible tells us that God hears our prayers. You do not need formal, eloquent prayers. Just talk to Him from the heart, and He will hear you.) The Bible says:

"From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us."

-Acts 17:26-27

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Then shall ye call upon Me, and ye shall go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you.

And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart."

-Jeremiah 29:11-13

Feeling Hopeless
A feeling of hopelessness may overwhelm us if we have a lack of faith and trust in God. The Bible tells us to trust in the Lord with all of our hearts, not to lean on our own understanding, but in everything we do, acknowledge God (include Him in our decisions), and He will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:5). We are told in Scripture that "all things work together for good to them that love God and who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Turn to God. He can work good even out of the worst circumstances.

Resist Comparing Yourself
We must resist the temptation of believing that everything we have achieved in life is because of who we are or how hard we've worked. God is the source of life. He created us. He created the earth. All wisdom and knowledge come from Him. He is the source of our success, skills, talents and gifts. We must acknowledge that every good thing we have comes from God. We must also resist comparing ourselves to others who seem "better off". Be thankful to God and content with the things that He has provided for you.

"Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, Who created all heaven's lights."

-James 1:17

"After all, we didn't bring anything with us when we came into the world, and we certainly cannot carry anything with us when we die. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content."

-1 Timothy 6:7-8

Sin Causes Sorrow
This psalmist experienced weakness and misery when he kept his sins to himself:

"When I refused to confess my sin, I was weak and miserable, and I groaned all day long."

-Psalm 32:3

Most of us feel that we are generally "good" people. However, the Bible tells us that "Godly sorrow leads us to repentance" (2 Corinthians 7:10). There may be times when we have unconfessed sin in our lives that we have overlooked or allowed, and God will allow us to feel sorrow so that we will realize the consequences of wrong thoughts, words, and actions (sin). If one is living apart from God, or has slipped into a sinful lifestyle, the results are not joy and peace.

The results of wrong thoughts, words, and actions are counterfeit and fleeting joy... temporary satisfaction.

Sin causes sorrow.

In other words, if you lie, you might have a temporary "relief". But the emotional consequence of that sin would be a feeling of guilt and a lack of peace -- your conscience would "bother" you. This is God's way of "sounding off an alarm" so to speak. When these "alarms" go off and one ignores them, over time, guilt from our sins then turns into sorrow.

Humbly examine yourself and ask God to examine your heart and mind. Ask Him if there is anything in your life that is displeasing to Him. He will lead you in the right direction. The Bible says:

"Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

-Psalm 139:23-24

What Do You Do?
If the Holy Spirit brings a specific sin to your mind, quickly acknowledge and confess it to the Lord. With His help, make the changes needed to remove it from your life. God promises to forgive us and cleanse of all sin and unrighteousness.

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

-1 John 1:9

"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that He may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you--even Jesus."

-Acts 3:19-20 (New International Version)

"The Lord and King is the Holy One of Israel. He says, 'You will find peace and rest when you turn away from your sins and depend on Me. You will receive the strength you need when you stay calm and trust in Me..."

-Isaiah 30:15 (New International Reader's Version)
